Course Description:

An educational program to provide Dufferin County’s social agencies important information on a mutual multi-disciplinary team (MDT) response program in recognition, response to and prevention of domestic violence and abuse on victims of all ages.

Course Overview:

Dental staff are often the 1st health-care professionals to spot traumatic injuries resulting from victim abuse & domestic violence therefore should be considered a key “first responder” in early recognition, capable of providing immediate referrals and safety protocols to victims of abuse in Dufferin County. All social service agencies must understand why the profession of dentistry is unique by having patients / clients returning on a regularly scheduled basis for routine dental services (every 6-months or on immediate emergency services). Dental staff easily build patient rapport and are able to recognise early signs of suspected abuse. By working as a community multi-disciplinary team (MDT) partner, traumatic abuse injuries can be kept to a minimum and intervention, for both victim & abuser, is beneficial for all concerned in any community.

Course Objectives:

- Understanding Dufferin County’s legal & mandated duty to report suspected abuse

- Review types of abuse on victims of all ages (child, spousal/partner, senior)

- Roles, scopes and Mandates (by Law) of abuse recognition for all dental professionals

- How local social services must work together as a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) for the benefit of all victims of abuse, domestic violence & human trafficking
